Adrenaline – How it affects an Athlete?

During the generation of high doses of adrenaline, the body is able to operate at maximum power. But is this necessary for  sports? And does that lead to high blood pressure during exercise?

It is known that the adrenal glands are responsible for the release of adrenaline into the blood. This occurs when a person is in a stressful situation, the main emotions that contribute to its isolation are fear and anger. When a large amount of this hormone enters the blood, the body begins to work in the transcendental mode. Also, simultaneously with the adrenaline, a selection of a hormones, including cortisol and growth hormones, activate as well.


When adrenaline is released in the blood, the effects are : elevated blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and the hard tissue begins to absorb oxygen. In addition, it increases brain activity and people can quickly make important decisions in a stressful situation. Without a doubt, this feeling cannot be forgotten. Anyone who once experienced increased adrenaline and emotion associated with this euphoric process will try to experience these emotions again. Here is why the roller coaster is so popular.

The changes that occur in the body during the release of adrenaline are the following:

Mobilized nervous system

In order to prevent loss of blood, capillaries begin to tighten.

Increased heart rate.

Increased consumption of fat to extract additional energy.

Increased ability of blood to clot.

As seen from the above, adrenaline has a protective function in many ways. It is very useful in a stressful situation. However, the fact that this hormone can accelerate the degradation of fat is the reason why it is in the top preparations used by athletes.


Most experts believe that people practicing a sport generate more hormones naturally. The generation of adrenaline in the body is carried out continuously, and the process can be increased by so-called "athlete's venom." Almost every person as a child has been engaged in some kind of sport and is familiar with the adrenaline-rush feeling. You can feel the adrenaline mostly during competition.

Meanwhile, the hormone can increase the effectiveness of the training because intentional rush of adrenaline is high. Those who want to build muscle, resort to increasing the hormone artificially. There are special preparations that can help with this issue. Thus, we can say that adrenaline and exercises are related only to the level of consciousness. At the moment when an athlete is feeling "angry", he feels a rush of adrenaline.


During each workout, an athlete feels the rush that of natural hormone. This process cannot be observed, but high levels of adrenaline in the blood lead to accelerated metabolism, which itself leads to a larger consumption of energy. Ultimately, the process of the hormone release also appears when having  heavy physical exercise.

This is due to the fact that when a person starts to get tired, the body perceives such loads as a threat and begins to produce more "stress hormone." The metabolic processes and the body's defense mechanisms start to activate (biochemistry). Typically, this condition appears after 30 or 40 minutes from the beginning of an active workout and then is continued for about one hour after completion.

During this period, the body consumes not only high amounts of fat, but also carbohydrates. During the first hour, after the completion of training, all athletes consume carbohydrates (food) for the recovery of muscle tissue, which leads to growth. In addition, each subsequent workout becomes more efficient at burning fat. It is very important after a workout to eat some food, because that reduces the effects of stress hormones on the body. Otherwise, the process will delay the recovery of muscle tissue and the effectiveness of training will fall sharply.

Take foods rich in carbohydrates. They contribute to the release of insulin, which reduces the effect of epinephrine and cortisol. Also, due to excess insulin, glucose is transferred to a new "reserve" and not in the form of glycogen and fat.

What benefits or harms can adrenaline bring to the body?

As mentioned above, adrenaline is primarily intended for the preparation of the body to face stressful situations. Thanks to it, people become more active,  it stimulates the brain and nervous activity, because the number of white blood cells and platelets in the blood increase. Overall, the body enters a "changing" process. However, adrenaline can bring some harm.

First, the increased blood pressure adversely affects the heart. If the level of adrenaline in the blood increases often, this may be one of the causes for the arrhythmia.

Secondly, adrenaline is a very strong hormone and it is quite difficult for the body to withstand the load it receives. To reduce, the body begins to release norepinephrine, which then gives the opposite effect. When the adrenaline is in action, norepinephrine still remains in the blood, and there comes a state of relaxation. The longer you remain in a stressful condition, the longer will last the so-called "confusion".

Thirdly, and most importantly, the long-term effects of adrenaline are on the adrenal gland. This is a very dangerous process. In medicine, there is even a special term for it - acute adrenal insufficiency. The consequences of this condition can be very severe.


The euphoric feeling that occurs when large amounts of the hormone enter the blood is known to many. People who participate in extreme sports experience this condition very often. In medicine, the term "adrenaline addiction" is sometimes used. These feelings are almost impossible to forget and some start looking for an opportunity to go through them again. Of course, the most effective way to do this are extreme sports. Note for example, in skydiving, the flow of adrenaline is mind-boggling. There are special drugs for increasing the level of adrenaline, but artificial adrenaline is quite different.
